LANCASTER'S popular fireworks display will go ahead a week on Saturday, despite the fact that it clashes with the second two-day fire brigade strike.

There were fears that a lack of fire cover could prevent the Castle Hill spectacular, which draws tens of thousands of spectators, from going ahead.

The event will be cancelled if inclement weather on the day makes it too dangerous to go ahead.

A council spokesman said: "By cancelling the event we could be encouraging smaller scale events which may be more dangerous."

The issue was discussed with emergency planning officers at Lancashire County Council, who say it can go ahead as long as the usual stewarding arrangements are in place and a proper risk assessment is carried out.
