AUTOMATIC gates in place to stop Traffic entering Leigh's pedestrianised zone are to be reinforced -- to make shopping safer.
The move follows complaints about thoughtless motorists pushing through the gates during restricted times.
Traffic is banned from the heart of Leigh's shopping area between 10am and 4pm Monday to Saturday but vehicles have damaged entry gates putting shoppers at risk.
Subject to Cabinet approval £25,000 will be spent modifying the gates closure mechanism which will raise 200mm diameter bollards during prohibited times.
