PUPILS are being urged to go yellow in a bid to keep the environment green.
They could win prizes for their school by collecting old copies of Yellow Pages, which Bury Council will then arrange to be recycled.
Students and their families should hand in the old Yellow Pages, the ones with the fluffy chicks on the cover, when the new directories are delivered.
The Bury school which collects the most directories will win £300. All participating schools will be entered into the Yellow Woods Challenge UK Finals for a chance to win £2,000, and receive a certificate and an education pack.
For each £1 that Yellow Pages gives out in prizes, it will donate another £1 to the Woodland Trust, the UK's leading woodland conservation charity.
Richard Duggleby, head of external relations for Yell, the publisher of Yellow Pages, said: "The challenge aims to educate young people about the environment. We hope it will show that doing even the smallest things can make a real difference to our world."
Directories can also be taken to Asda (Pilsworth) or Ramsbottom (Market car park/Kwik Save) for recycling.
Councillor Stella Smith, executive member for the environment, said: "This is such a simple way of aiding the environment. Schools can earn extra funding, our woodlands are protected and improved for future generations and we are boosting recycling. Everyone is a winner."
