TUESDAY evening's game was a dream come true for young Shakers debutant Paul O'Shaughnessy.

Midfielder 'Shaughny,' Bury born and bred and an unashamed Shakers fanatic, admitted after the LDV Vans Trophy win over Rochdale it was a night he will never forget.

His only previous first team appearance was as a substitute against Chesterfield in the same competition last season.

But he's been a regular on the Shakers' substitutes bench this term although he has yet to see any action.

"It was brilliant to be involved tonight," he declared. "As a Bury fan it means a lot to wear the shirt and we haven't played Rochdale for a few years.

"I've waited a long time to get my chance and hopefully now I've taken it.

"It can get frustrating when you are on the bench every week and don't get on but most of the matches we've had have been tight so an opportunity hasn't risen.

"Hopefully I have now given the manager something to think about.

"My dad, brother, uncle and all the family were down tonight and my grand-dad, who works at the club, was sat in the front row as he can't see too far," he grinned.

The 21-year-old put in a great display for his folks and, along with Dave Nugent, Nicky Hill and Simon Whaley, underlined just what a good crop of young players Andy Preece has at his disposal.

But the icing on the cake for O'Shaughnessy was lining up with his hero Lenny Johnrose.

"Lenny is a legend here and I used to watch him every week when I was a kid," he added.

"He constantly talks to you and has great experience, just what the younger players need.

"It was fantastic to play with him and hopefully there will be many more occasions."
