BURGLARS now have 250 reasons to avoid Bacup and Stacksteads.
Pickings in the area are anything but easy after potential burglary victims -- that is everyone -- were offered free security packages by the Single Regeneration Budget-funded Burglary Fightback Campaign.
Organisers last week fitted their 250th house with five-lever mortice deadlocks, window locks, doorchains and door-viewers. The campaign is now in its second year, during which the area's burglary rate has dropped markedly, says Rossendale council.
Trish Ellins, its community safety officer, said: "Burglary has dropped dramatically. It is not all to do with better security but we are confident it has played a part. People feel more secure.
"There is evidence that victims are often burgled again soon afterwards. The thieves simply wait for goods to be replaced then strike again.
"We contact victims very quickly and fit better equipment so they are protected from return visits."
All equipment is provided and fitted free. Trish added: "Anyone who contacts us from the Bacup and Stacksteads area will receive the package. You do not have to have been a crime victim or on a low income."
