A WOMAN helping a wheelchair-bound youngster lead a better quality of life is enjoying a new lease of life herself.
Val Arnold of Roylen Avenue, Poulton, was still mourning the loss of her husband Jon when she saw a notice at her GP's surgery, appealing for people to help children with special needs.
"From that moment my life has completely changed," said Mrs Arnold, 60, who is now a carer for 12-year-old Shaunaleigh Kelly of Fleetwood who is confined to a wheelchair with spina bifida.
Next month she is organising a benefit night for Shaunaleigh to help buy her an improved wheelchair and is also planning a charity soccer match to help PIP (Promoting Inclusive Partnerships) the charity which helps local children with special needs.
"I am loving every minute and it's really filling the hours.
"Shaunaleigh is a wonderful girl -- so happy and full of life," said Mrs Arnold, who will stage a night of entertainment at the Queen's Hotel, South Shore, on November 25 hosted by Mike Rossi. She is appealing for raffle prizes to help boost the night.
Shaunaleigh lives in Fleetwood with her parents Julie and Michael and sisters Emma and Rebecca.
Mrs Arnold helps by taking her on days out and to activities at Stanley Park sports centre.
"Shaunaleigh is an absolute inspirational person," said Mrs Arnold. "She lights up my life with her smile and her great sense of fun; a rare delight to be with."
Mrs Arnold's husband Jon, who died last year, was well-known local singer known as The Voice of Broadway.
