I BELIEVE MP David Chaytor to be absolutely spot-on when he suggests the building of a relief road, crossing from Birtle to Bury New Road. In fact, I would go further and take the road right across to the M66 at Pilsworth.
Is it not correct that the majority of traffic coming down Rochdale Old Road through Fairfield is from Bamford, Norden and Rochdale? The council should have built a relief road at the same time as the M66 corridor was built, and then our main road through Fairfield would still be fairly quiet and able to absorb the extra traffic created by the hospital.
Rochdale Council must surely fund the cost of a new relief road and build it within their boundary. If they cannot see that, then Bury should impose a toll at our boundary, charging motorists to come in, just like the Welsh have done with Bristol and the Severn toll.
ANTONY WIGLEY, Fairfield, Bury.
