BURNLEY Football Club's participation in the anti-racism week today comes with a clear message to all fans: "Let's keep the racists out of Turf Moor."
Manager Stan Ternent, chairman Barry Kilby and players Steve Davis and Arthur Gnohere have all spoken out against racism this week but the message from the police is that the fans have a massive part to play.
Insp Dave Shepherd from the Pennine Division is the football match commander explained: "We will take every step possible that we can but we need the fans to help us.
"If they hear someone hurling racist abuse they have to tell the police or the stewards and we can take action. We will arrest people and charge them but we need support.
"Also if someone is being racist, those around them need to make them aware that it is totally unacceptable . The members of the public are very important in making these people outcasts.
"There has been an ominous trend nationally in respect of hooliganism that does include racism. I am pleased to say locally it is not such a big problem but it is something that we are always concerned about.
"That is why we are determined to take positive action whenever it is needed."
