POLICE today renewed an appeal for witnesses after an 80-year-old man was robbed for his last £5.

Kevin Corrigan was battered and kicked to the ground in the Sudellside area of Darwen by a gang of four muggers.

He has a possible nose fracture, gashed forehead, a black eye and cuts to his hands after the vicious attack at 1am on Thursday. Mr Corrigan said he could have been killed.

The attackers were said to be white and aged 18 to 30, around 5ft 11in tall and wearing baseball caps. Mr Corrigan thinks two of them were wearing Blackburn Rovers shirts.

Anyone with information should call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, or Blackburn CID on 01254 353569.

A kind-hearted reader has anonymously replaced Mr Corrigan's stolen fiver after being disgusted by the mugging.

A note, handed in at the Lancashire Evening Telegraph's Darwen office, reads: "From a well-wisher and fellow Darwener".
