REGARDING the resignation of Jim Bowen from the Radio Lancashire morning show as a consequence of using the word nig-nog (LET, October 7) I was curious to know what exactly this word means and from where it derives.

Radio Lancashire has a slot on the Sunday morning Normal Prince show, which encourages listeners to ring in with curious questions, a significant number of which are about common words and phrases.

With the help of listeners, the programme attempts to find answers.

I rang to find out about 'nig-nog,' but got no further than the receptionist, who said she didn't think they could put the query on air.

I then attempted to find the word in two dictionaries; it was in neither.

So a popular presenter has forfeited his job due, it seems, to a word which does not exist and to which no-one wants to find a meaning or source.
