BARNOLDSWICK will be transformed into Middle Earth this weekend as part of a fireworks spectacular which promises to pay homage to the Lord of the Rings.

Members of Pendle Council will host the event at Victory Park on Sunday, November 3, after deciding to ditch the traditional bonfire for a fantasy sound and light show.

They expect up to 10,000 people to attend after Pendle's Community Safety Partnership approved £3,900 for safety and security.

Entitled Barnoldswick's Battle of Weathertop, more than a tonne of gunpowder will be used in the 21-minute finale alone.

More than 13,000 individual fireworks, including massive 18-inch shells will also be used as well as giant illuminated inflatables and millions of laser lights.

Starting at 6pm, there will be a heated Hobbit toddler tent during the two hour performance.

At 6.30pm a fantasy castle will begin to meet a fiery end, then the event will build to a climax of entirely aerial fireworks starting at 7.30pm.

It is hoped fire-eaters will entertain the crowd, and children's rides and refreshments will be available.

The event will be fully patrolled with 250m of security fencing enclosing a spectators area.

For safety reasons, spectators own fireworks are not allowed, and no sparklers.

Entrance is £1 adults, children 50p.

Parking is available nearby.
