A TEENAGER who attacked his pregnant 16-year-old girlfriend in a drunken rage has been jailed for 90 days.

Blackburn magistrates heard that Neil John Irwin started pushing the girl around after a night at the pub.

And when his mother tried to intervene, he punched her in the eye. He was kneeling on his mother and when the girl tried to pull him off, he pushed her away before punching her in the face.

The court was told that before the incident, Irwin had locked the doors and hidden the keys so that nobody could get out.

Irwin, 18, of Hawthorn Avenue, Darwen, admitted assaulting Kristy Holt.

Clare Fanning, prosecuting, said that when Miss Holt tried to phone the police, Irwin ripped the phone from its socket and smashed it against the wall. Miss Holt screamed for help and when Irwin tried to stop her, his mother again intervened and both women suffered further blows.

When quizzed by police, Irwin said he had hit his girlfriend in the past, breaking her jaw, but denied assaulting her on this occasion.

John Dewhurst, defending, said Irwin had been very drunk on the night and could not remember a great deal of what had happened.

"He initially denied the offence but having discussed matters with the aggrieved, he pleaded guilty," said Mr Dewhurst.

"Kristy is expecting their child and they are reconciled."

The court heard that Irwin is still subject to a three-year probation order imposed for an offence of wounding.
