A VOLUNTEER driver has scooped a special award for his service to the community.
Thomas Cocker, 77, is a familiar face to Preston Community Transport travellers after being a driver for the voluntary service for ten years.
Thomas, or Tommy as he is known, received Lancashire County Council's coveted Standard in Intelligent Transport award in recognition of his long standing association.
Tommy helps passengers on and off the buses for their daily journeys around Preston. He even plans journeys to ensure passengers can make vital trips.
Tommy, who went to Buckingham Palace earlier this year, said: "The main thing for passengers is to be able to get around. One lady from Frenchwood met a former neighbour who she hadn't seen for 30 years when she started using our buses. I enjoy it and will continue for as long as I'm needed."
Veronica Judge, chairman of Preston Community Transport, said: "I'm sure the many hundreds of elderly and disabled people in Preston will join us in congratulating Tommy. He's a dedicated and caring man. His tireless efforts are an example to us all."
