IN recent weeks, English football fans have been down in the dumps, while their Welsh counterparts have been in the unusual position of jubilant as they feel on top of the world.
But Leigh RMI are hoping to change that in the second round of the LDV Vans Trophy when they take on Third Division Wrexham at Hilton Park in mid-November.
Feelings are mixed at RMI about the draw. On the one hand, it is delight at avoiding Conference opposition that proves unprofitable in this competition. Conversely, they were so close to plucking Wigan Athletic out of the hat, with the Latics drawn immediately after Wrexham.
The North Wales side have Third Division leading marksman Andy Morrell among their ranks as well as confident striker Lee Trundle, but recent defeats to Lincoln City and Hartlepool have seen them fall from the dizzy heights of the top three to mid table obscurity after relegation from the Second Division in the final week of last season.
RMI have never beaten a league side in competitive football since moving to Leigh in 1994, but they came close against Fulham four years ago in the FA Cup. 3-0 defeats at Millwall and Hull City - in this competition last season - have followed since.
The game will take place on Tuesday, November 12 if the Railwaymen can switch their current fixture on that date. They are scheduled to face Radcliffe Borough at the moment in a Lancashire Cup First Round tie.
