A MULTICULTURAL peace garden has been officially opened by the mayor and mayoress of Burnley.

The Growing Together garden was officially opened to the public by Coun Gordon Birtwistle and his wife Kathleen and was coordinated by volunteers at the Prince's Trust.

The garden is expected to provide a token to help bring different communities together in light of the Burnley riots in June last year.

It was created by the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service Prince's Trust Volunteers Programme.

The garden, in the grounds of St Andrew's Church was blessed by Fr Christopher Peter.

Volunteer Carla Osborne said: "We have been working hard to make the garden a place for everybody to enjoy and hope that all sections of the community will take advantage of it."
