COUNCILLORS are set to debate proposals to spend £20,000 on road safety improvements in Nelson.

Four schemes are being put forward costing between £2,000 and £8,000, including cycle lane facilities in the Nelson area.

Pendle Borough Council approved the plans to spend the money in May but detailed proposals have only just been outlined and were due to be discussed at a meeting of Nelson Committee tonight.

The first proposed scheme is for the improvement of footpaths around Walverden reservoir and will cost £4,000.

The second involves a cycle link from the Reedyford site of Nelson and Colne College, through the Lomeshaye industrial estate to Churchill Way near the bridge across the River Calder.

The route, costing £6,000, will link up with the existing Pendle Cycleway network.

The third proposal is to improve the effectiveness of speed controls on Brunswick Street by adding speed cushions to slow down traffic.

The plan is the most expensive of the proposed schemes at £8,000.

The last proposal is for improved flood defences in Rimington Palce and Gib Hill Road. The plan, costing £2,000, will involve diverting existing water flows.
