RAIN failed to dampen the spirits of 15,000 people who turned out in force for Blackburn's biggest charity bonfire.

The event, at Witton Park, raised over £3,500 for the Lancashire Evening Telegraph Magic Eye Appeal, and organisers said a huge thank you to everyone who braved the weather to watch the spectacle.

Blackburn Rovers players Neil Danns and Jonathan Douglas put the torch to the 60ft-high bonfire, which was followed by a spectacular 15-minute firework display.

A funfair, catering vans and treacle toffee stalls were also at hand to further pep up the spirits of spectators.

Organiser Heather Schofield, chairman of Blackburn Rotaract, said: "About 15,000 people braved the pouring rain to turn up and the event was very well received.

"The fireworks were spectacular and the whole event went really well. We are really pleased with the money we raised and would particularly like to thank the Rotary Clubs of Blackburn and Darwen for their help and support. It was a tremendous evening."

A question mark hung over the event amid concerns about the level of cover provided by Green Goddesses if the fire service had gone ahead with a proposed strike as part of its campaign for a 40 per cent pay rise.

But after taking advice from insurers and fire safety officers at Blackburn Fire Station, it was decided the bonfire could go ahead as planned.

Proceeds will go to the Magic Eye Appeal, which aims to raise £200,000 for a state-of-the-art ultrasound scanner.

The equipment will benefit the whole of East Lancashire by offering quicker and less traumatic diagnosis of stomach and oesophagus cancer.
