POLICE in Burnley have launched an official investigation following an assault on a popular community beat officer.
PC Nic Fisher, Community Beat Manager for Daneshouse and Stoneyholme, was assaulted while on duty around 9.30am.
He was taken to Burnley General Hospital but has now been discharged.
PC Fisher had been informing local residents of a series of arrests in the community by fellow officers earlier on that morning.
The assault has been condemned by local leaders. Muhammad Sher Ali Miah from the Bangladeshi Welfare Association said: "We are all very saddened by this attack.
"PC Fisher is a good officer who works hard for the local community and we totally condemn this attack.
"This sort of behaviour cannot and must not be tolerated. If anyone knows anything about this incident then I would urge them to come forward."
Superintendent Steve Hartley, Operations Manager for Pennine Police said: "A thorough investigation has already been launched.
"Sadly, assaults such as this occur in all communities however we are aware of the groundswell of support for PC Fisher and this is very much welcomed."
