SHAKERS leading goal-scorer, Jon Newby, has been voted into the Top 100 Great Britons in a BBC poll.
Listeners to the BBC's new digital radio station, 6 Music, were offered the chance to vote for their all-time favourite Briton.
An unnamed fan wasted no time in nominating Newby for his pace and skill on the ball, and encouraged other Shakers supporters to do the same.
The poll, which ranks Jon alongside footballing legends George Best and Jimmy Greaves, is an alternative to the official list of the Top 100 Britons which is currently the subject of a BBC2 television series.
The alternative list also includes author Douglas Adams, local musician Mark E. Smith, and the 1980s children's character, Mr Spoon. Jon Newby, who ranked 85th in the listing, was delighted by the news that he had been featured on the list.
He said: "I am truly honoured to be voted into the list alongside two of the best footballers ever. The fact that Mr Spoon, who went to Button Moon, is also in the list doesn't bother me at all -- I did come higher than him".
Andrew Collins, presenter of the popular tea-time show, said he had no idea how much fun they would have compiling the list. "I admire the official BBC Great Britons list -- we just thought our listeners would have some more unusual suggestions, and they did. It was a great success and it is nice to see Ringo Starr in there, the only Beatle not to make the proper 100", said the presenter.
