THOUSANDS are expected to flock to Accrington town centre next week for the Christmas lights switch on.
The event, which is one of the highlights of the town's calendar, will also feature entertainment from The Houghton Weavers and local band Tessem, who have been likened to The Beautiful South.
Accrington's festive season officially begins on Thursday, November 14 at the town hall with music, including live performances, from 5.30pm.
A council spokesman said the event would be hosted by the "hugely entertaining" Paul Johnson of Sky's Men and Motors fame.
Later in the evening, the traditional blessing of the crib ceremony will be carried out with the Accrington Boys Brigade Band and Benjamin Hargreaves School Choir adding to the seasonal spirit.
The Mayor of Hyndburn, Councillor Sandra Hayes, will then switch on the thousands of Christmas lights in the town centre around 6.30pm, followed by a giant aerial firework display from the Arndale Centre roof.
November 14 also sees the start of Christmas shopping in Accrington with many businesses staying open until 9pm.
Late night shopping until 8pm will continue every Thursday in the run up to Christmas, and shops will also open between 10am and 4pm on Sundays.
Throughout the festive period, shoppers can look forward to a range of lively street entertainers including jugglers, comedians and musicians every weekend.
