POLICE are hoping to trace trouble makers who invaded the pitch at the Lancashire football derby on Saturday by using CCTV evidence.
Officers have warned that offenders will not escape justice as they fight to crack down on fans misbehaving at football matches.
A group of around 100 Burnley supporters invaded the pitch following their side's goal in the 3-1 defeat by Preston at Deepdale.
One Burnley fan pushed Preston goalkeeper David Lucas and another stood 40 yards from the Preston goal with arms raised towards the Clarets fans, preventing the game from re-starting.
He was eventually rugby tackled by a steward in the Preston goalmouth as he tried to avoid being caught.
The incident prompted a smaller pitch invasion by Preston fans following their team's second goal.
Supporters have demanded lifetime bans for the Burnley fans involved in the trouble who they said shamed the club by their behaviour.
Following up from the Preston and Burnley clash, Chief Inspector Richard Blackburn said: "We carried out a number of ejections after the fans invaded the pitch.
"We are now making further inquiries into the incident and will be looking at CCTV from the area and will then take appropriate action.
"We will be working with Preston North End and Burnley FC as well as liaising with Burnley police to help bring these people to justice.
"The reason we didn't carry out arrests at the game was because it wasn't practical and in past experience arresting people in large scale crowd encroachment can make the situation worse.
"People can be sure that we will be making inquiries into the identity of a number of people and a number of arrests are expected in the future."
Anybody with information about the incident is asked to contact Burnley police on 01282 425001 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
