STAN Ternent knows all about the proud history shared between Burnley and Spurs and he is hoping his side can be the stars of the next chapter tonight.

"It should be a good game of football, we are playing top class opposition and it is something to look forward to," he explained.

"I remember in the early 60s when I came to the club as a kid they were the two best teams in the country.

"They played in an FA Cup Final, they were both League Champions and there were some great games, one finished 4-4 and we beat them 7-2 in the last game of one season."

Having had a 6-5 defeat at Grimsby last week almost anything can happen at Burnley tonight but one thing is certain, the Clarets are going for victory.

"Of course the league is our priority but we take the Worthington Cup very seriously," vowed Ternent. "From a financial point of view it is very important to us but it is also important to Tottenham.

"This gives them a chance to go for a European place and whatever team Glenn Hoddle puts out will be a good one.

"They are top quality players and I am sure it will be a competitive match."

"It will be a good game because they will pass the ball and be competitive and we hope to do the same.

"Glenn has done a fantastic job down there, he is an experienced manager who plays the game the right way. I know him well and John Gorman is a good friend of mine from our days at Carlisle together as players.

Ternent knows his side must tighten up at the back and said: "In the last two games we have been conceding goals too easily. We want to get back to being difficult to beat but still entertaining.

"We have not even given ourselves a chance to get a foothold in games and that is something we have talked about. We have been creating chances, scoring goals and done quite well."

"But Ian Cox is out with a hamstring injury, Gordon Armstrong is also injured so in central defence I just have Steve Davis, Arthur Gnohere and Mark McGregor so I don't have many options. The middle of the defence is part of the squad where I don't have depth."

One thing he does hope is that the fans will get right behind his side and roar them to victory.

"The fans can play a massive role," he said. "Tonight is a great chance for them to come and see international footballers back at Turf.

"This is what we hoped for in the early rounds, a big club at home, and now we need to go out, play well and hopefully win the match.

"If we play to our full potential and they play ton their's, Tottenham should win but we hope to catch them on a bad night. This will be a good yardstick for us against a side in the top half dozen in the Premiership.

"Who knows what will happen in cup football."

His opposite number Hoddle said: "This will be a full blooded cup tie and very rarely do Burnley fail to score.

"They are a good footballing side, there will be a big crowd and a good atmosphere, and they have nothing to lose.

"It will be a tough game, we know we are going to have to focus and be up for this game, and we shall be. We got to the final and lost last season and we are hoping to go one better this time around."

It is up to Ternent's side to prove they are capable of stopping them..
