UP to 50 jobs are set to go at a major Haslingden employer after the company announced it was switching some of its production to Germany.

Madison Filter Ltd, based at the Knowsley Road Industrial Estate, employs a total of 160 people at the plant which makes textiles for use in industry.

Bosses said they planned to axe 47 jobs in the factory's weaving section and move the operation to Walbeck in Germany.

The company is now in talks with unions about the cuts and a final decision will be made at the end of the month.

The news of the planned job cuts comes as a body blow to the area following the announcement that Mayfield Chicks in Ewood Bridge was to shut with the loss of 25 jobs.

The hatchery, which burned down earlier this year, destroying over three million eggs, is set to close later this month.

A spokesman for Madison Filter Ltd said: "The company announced it was planning to transfer its weaving operation to a sister company in Germany and close the weaving section in the UK, a move which would affect 47 jobs.

"We are now in consultation with employees' representatives for the next 30 days before a final decision is taken."

Rossendale and Darwen MP Janet Anderson today said that she was worried about the number of job losses which had taken place in Rossendale recently.

She said she would be taking steps to consult with the company and offer her help.

She added: "I am very concerned about this and sad that the company has decided to re-locate elsewhere.

"I do not know the circumstances surrounding this case so I will try and arrange a meeting with the company to see if I can help in any way.

"I am very concerned about the whole issue because I am aware that Mayfield Chicks is to close which combined with the latest announcement will have a huge impact on Rossendale.

"If people have any difficulties in finding alternative employment, then they can feel free to contact me and I will do my best to help them."

Rumours of job losses at nearby Camfil, based on the same industrial estate and which also makes filtration equipment, were today denied by management.

Commercial manager David Moulton said: "We are currently buoyant and recruiting for staff so there will be no job losses here."
