THE long journey to Workington on a miserable day didn't dampen Dale's resolve.
A battling display brought only a solitary try from winger Daks Balfour and a penalty from Keith Howie.
Three first half penalties to the home side saw them hold a narrow lead at the break, with flowing rugby difficult in the wet conditions.
A crucial breakaway try following a scrummage by Workington dented Dale's hopes of a victory but their efforts were not to go unrewarded.
Despite the double sin-binning of Scott Cunliffe and Paul Woodward, Rossendale's resolve was rewarded with Balfour scoring in the corner following some fluid handling by the backs.
With things conspiring against them Dale, can be satisfied with their performance given that they have been struggling with injuries of late.
Coach Andy Birtwistle said: "Given our current injury situation, the conditions and refereeing I thought our display was very creditable.
"The lads never gave up and kept plugging away. Scott Cunliffe, Matt Corns, and Steven Lowe all deserve a mention as do Bruce Duff on his first team debut and Daks Balfour.
"If the forwards could have supplied some quality ball I feel our backs could have threatened".
Rossendale entertain De La Salle from Salford in a rearranged league fixture on Saturday (ko 2.30pm).
