REQUEST from panto-goers has led to local favourite George Critchley stepping in to the role of Buttons for the forthcoming pantomime Cinderella at Colne Municipal Hall.

Nathan Zorchak was originally cast in the role but had to pull out because of other commitments.

The search was then on for an actor to replace him and George has traditionally played the roles of Wishy Washee in Aladdin, Silly Billy in Jack and the Beanstalk, Muddles in Snow White and Buttons in Cinderella.

But last year's production, Aladdin, saw George take on the smaller part of the Genie, as he also produced the show.

This year he was due to play opposite Tim Pope in the role of Ugly Sister.

George said: "I have always loved playing the "daft" character in panto. I think I was born to do it!

"I really do enjoy it but thought it was perhaps time to let someone else have a go, as people might be tired of seeing me in the same role year after year.

"I have also started producing the shows, which is a demanding role in itself. But it seems I was wrong!

"The response to me taking on the new role has been overwhelming and very flattering, and I'll look forward to seeing everyone after Christmas."

Replacing George in the role of Ugly Sister will be Chris Peskett, who played Sgt Ping in last year's, Aladdin.

Cinderella is on at Colne Municipal Hall, from January 4 to 19, 2003. Tickets can be bought from the box office on 01282 661234.
