THE Internet opens up a world of information that in the past would have only been available to an elite few.
There are countless encyclopaedias, maps and academic papers online, but now the world famous Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston has opened up its courses to all.
MIT has started a unique project and is putting huge amounts of course materials (presentations, lectures, seminar notes, reading lists, and so on) on the Internet for free.
The result is the Open CourseWare project (ocw.mit.edu).
The subjects available are listed on the left of the page - just click and see what you can find.
If you have the time you could study Electricity and Magnetism, Linear Algebra or even Transport Processes in the Environment.
It would be even more interesting if other colleges and universities around the world followed the same example, and devoted more energy to sharing their teaching.
