CLARETS boss Stan Ternent celebrated one of the best nights of his managerial career as his side recorded a deserved 2-1 victory over Premiership giants Tottenham Hotspur.
Having seen his side reach the fourth round for the first time in 20 years, he admitted: "We want a home draw or a big team away."
Robbie Blake and Steve Davis got the goals that saw the Clarets recover from a half-time deficit, having conceded an early goal to Uruguayan star Gus Poyet.
But only minutes after having triumphed in the Worthington Cup, Ternent reiterated his main aim is success in the league.
"We showed tonight we are as good as most teams in our division and I am hopeful we can crack on," he said. "We have a massive match on Saturday against another of the front-runners in the league but I know what we can do if we play to our full potential."
His team certainly showed him what they can do last night and he said: "We were up against a very good team and my players did extremely well.
"We had a couple of breaks but Robbie hit the post and we did create some good chances."
And after the struggles in defence in the last couple of games, Ternent was delighted with the way his side dug in and he joked: "It is not so bad when you have only got to score two to win."
The game changed once Glen Little came off the bench to replace Mark McGregor in the 27th minute and the Clarets were especially inspired at the start of the second half.
The two goals came either side of the interval but Ternent said: "I didn't shout at them, I just talked to them normally. I told them they had done well in the last bit of the first half and they needed to believe in themselves. We needed to push Paul Weller higher up on Clemence and that helped us."
He was also helped by the continued good form of Blake who got a deflected goal and would have had another goal but for the woodwork.
"Robbie has got a good shot with both fee," said his manager. "I know when I signed him people said that I'd wasted another £1million but he is now showing he is a very good player."
Ternent was unconcerned about the side that his opposite number put out and he stressed: "That was a very good team and Glenn will have his reasons for naming the side he did. But they are in the top five in the Premiership and he knows what he was doing."
And Hoddle himself admitted it was a big blow to crash out of the Worthington Cup after reaching the final last season.
"I rested Teddy Sheringham but the other changes I made were because of injuries," he said. "From 1-0 up we should have gone on to win the game."
That they didn't was credit to the Clarets but Ternent will spend the next two days trying to make sure last night's cup display is repeated in the league, starting on Saturday.
