WORK has begun on a major new scheme to improve the environment on a Bacup estate.

The Hawthorn Road Doorstep Green project was launched this weekend after 12 months of planning and consultation with residents.

The scheme, set for completion in Spring 2003, will provide a variety of play areas and gardens for the people living around the Hawthorn Road area of the Pennine Road estate.

There will be play areas for different ages as well as an all-weather sports pitch, landscaped areas and a sensory garden.

Funding for the first £160,000 phase has come from the Countryside Agency Doorstep Green fund, Lancashire Small Sites Reclamation programme, the Bacup and Stacksteads SRB and the Agregates Levy fund.

A fund-raising programme is under way for the second phase to buy play equipment and trees and flowers for the landscaped areas.
