MORE than 400 people braved heavy showers and blustery winds to enjoy a traditional bonfire night celebration.

The bad weather meant numbers were down on previous years, when attendences have averaged 1,500.

But following months of planning, Edenfield Village Residents Association was determined last Saturday night would not be a complete washout.

Chairman of the association, Mr Paul Bradburn, said: "The bonfire was very good. It took time to light the fireworks because of the rain, but we got them all lit eventually.

"We had 400 adults turn up but because the event was free to children, it was difficult to say how many there were. But, given the circumstances, the number that did turn out was good.

"Unfortunately, you can plan for everything except the weather for an event like this, especially living in Lancashire."

Last month there were fears that the event, which has been a highlight of the village's social calendar, was in danger of being cancelled because of the firefighters' pay dispute.
