THE newly-appointed headteacher of Nelson's Walton High School was yesterday in upbeat mood during the annual awards ceremony when he announced a £1.5m grant for a new sports hall.

Geoff Walker told parents, pupils, staff and invited guests, including Ivan Lewis, Under Secretary of State for Adult Learning and Skills, about the funding in his address.

His predecessor at the school had drawn reference to the need for such a project during his term as headteacher and Mr Walker referred to comments made by the former head.

He told his audience: "Last year Mr Farrant was very blunt when describing our sub-standard sports facilities. Well, I can tell you that we have a plan and some good news.

"Last week we finally discovered that, subject to Phase 2 planning approval, we should at last receive a grant through the New Opportunities Fund for a brand new sports hall with a budget of £1.5 million. Fingers crossed, building work should start next summer."

Mr Walker went on to say that this was exciting news which would ensure a significant market improvement in sports and health related activities.

He added: "We have a new food technology and special needs room, plans for new labs next summer and in the future will be completely refurbishing the canteen and dining facilities."

In the speech he told the audience that he was glad to have joined such a busy and vibrant school.
