A COMMUNITY group has been saved from closure at the 11th hour after filling two positions on its committee.

Greenhill Residents Association, in Great Harwood, had been facing the threat of disbanding since the treasurer and secretary left.

A meeting last month to find replacements met apathy with only 15 people turning up.

But last night residents showed their community spirit when they packed into the Jubilee Centre, on Greenhill, for another meeting and new candidates came forward to fill the posts.

Paul Dunn, vice-chairman and head of funding, said the development was a big relief.

"It's excellent news. We have been saved from the dead. The building was near enough packed to the rafters last night. We had so many people I couldn't believe it. I was over the moon.

"It was very close but we live to fight another day."

The group was set up three years ago and represents more than 200 residents on the estate.

Since its launch it has secured £1,500 funding from the council, and a Jubilee grant, to provide four computers, and in September a further £1,000 was allocated from the CVS for computer software and card tables, so the centre can be used for whist nights.

The centre is considering applying for more funding to provide computer training for the residents.

In the meantime their next meeting will take place on Tuesday at 7pm in the Jubilee Centre.
