DRUGS with a street value of almost £500,000 have been seized as part of an operation to tackle a gang operating in East Lancashire.

The 8kg of amphetamine was found at a flat in Brook Street, Clitheroe.

Details of the raid, on October 1, were revealed as a 49-year-old man from Accrington was charged with being concerned in the supply of the drug.

Blackburn magistrates were told the raid uncovered what amounted to an amphetamine factory.

Anthony Jarasunas, of Lodge Street, Accrington, was one of four people arrested in connection with the raids.

The magistrates rejected an application for bail and Jarasunas, a fork lift truck driver at Thwaites Brewery, was remanded in custody until November 14.

Speaking after the case detective inspector Peter Broome, of Accrington CID, said the seizure -- which had a street value of between £300,000 and £400,000 -- was a massive raid for police.

He said: "This haul was the biggest I am aware of in East Lancashire, certainly this year, and stands in comparison to any other haul in the North West."

Three other people have been released on police bail pending further inquiries.
