BIRMINGHAM International Airport (BIA) is becoming the first airport in the country where Muslims can carry out the 'wudu' in dedicated facilities.
Located in designated public toilets, they have been installed in response to the growing number of Muslim passengers who perform the washing ritual to purify the body before prayer.
Bob Kennett, the Airport's General Manager of Terminal Services, said, "With the increase in traffic to the Indian Sub Continent, it became apparent to the Airport that Wudu provision was needed. Prior to installation, standard hand basins were being used to carry out the ritual, but this was unsuitable for passengers. In addition, potential health and safety issues arose due to water spillage on toilet floors. Now we've resolved both problems and feedback has been extremely positive."
Cultural advice was sought from Mohammad Nazir of Nazir Associates, who worked with the Airport's architects to design and implement the new facilities. Mr Nazir is delighted with the results, and said: "The Airport has taken a practical step to provide a practical solution, and has eliminated any potential health and safety problems. It has undoubtedly improved the travelling experience for hundreds of Muslims."
The Wudu facilities can be found in both mens and ladies toilets on the ground floor of Terminal One.
