A KERB crawler was spotted by police trying to pick up a prostitute in Blackburn's red light district, a court was told.

Burnley Magistrates heard how Jafar Hajikarim Jabbary, 50, was seen carrying out the classic actions of a person soliciting, for almost half an hour.

Jabbary, of Durham Road, Wilpshire, denied persistently soliciting a woman or women for prostitution from a car on July 22.

He was convicted after a trial and was fined £100, with £60 costs.

Mike Cunningham, prosecuting, told the court the defendant had been seen by officers around the technical college in Blackburn, an area commonly known as its red light district.

He said two police officers were on plain clothes duty and between 10.15pm and 10. 40pm, saw Jabbary "carrying out the classic actions of a person trying to gain the favours of the ladies of the night."

The prostitute concerned appeared before Blackburn Magistrates the day after and was given a conditional discharge.
