DAVID Dunn's old school today defended the Rovers star against accusations he has become a playboy and said: "His feet are firmly on the ground".
Deputy head Phil Mooney said he was speaking out on behalf of all pupils and staff at St Augustine's RC High School, Billington, after the England midfielder was told he could leave his home town club Blackburn Rovers.
Blackburn manager Graeme Souness made the shock announcement last week. He said David had frustrated him this season because other things in his life had "taken his eye off the ball." David, from Great Harwood, has attracted attention in the national Press, for relationships with glamour model Jakki Degg and Emmerdale star Sammy Winward.
And, since he has been made available for transfer, several national papers have alleged that the 23 year-old had been living it up on the London party scene.
But Mr Mooney said these reports did not reflect the character the staff at his former school "know and respect."
David attended the school from 1991 to 1996 and still returns regularly to see his teachers. Mr Mooney said David's modesty was illustrated on his last visit when he blushed as pupils started singing 'Dunny for England'.
He added: "Throughout his rise to 'star' status David has remained a charitable, polite and conscientious supporter of his local communities.
"He is courteous to a fault and unfailingly patient when signing autographs.
"He has rarely turned down a request for him to attend a prize-giving function or charitable event and his presence has meant much to all those in attendance."
He has also made presentations at many other schools, with the most recent being at the prize night of Norden High School, Rishton.
Last week a football expert warned local players were under more pressure than 'outsiders' because of their links and commitments to their area.
Mr Mooney admitted it could be an "extra burden" for David, but added: "David's feet are firmly on the ground and the unstinting support of his granddad and family will ensure this remains so.
"Any organisation would be proud to have such an upstanding young man represent them in the manner to which we have become accustomed.
"David Dunn deserves the support of all Blackburn fans for it is many years since we have been able to follow a local hero in a successful Blackburn team."
