A SEMINAL moment in world history is being brought vividly back to life at Leigh's Turnpike Gallery as part of an exhibition that looks at who and where we are.
Manchester artists Emma Rushton and Derek Tyman have recreated a 1987 headline news story about a young German, Mathias Rust, who flew his small aircraft into then Soviet airspace, risking the full wrath of the Eastern Bloc by landing in Moscow's Red Square.
The artwork will form the centre-piece of their In This Place exhibition, which examines who we see ourselves as individually or as members of a local, national and international community.
The exhibition runs until March 22 and features hundreds of hand made flags, as well as historical documentation of events in Leigh.
The Turnpike Gallery is open Mon, Thurs, Fri 9.30am-5.30pm, Tues 10am-5.30pm, Wed 9.30am-5pm and Sat 10am-3pm.
