AN East Lancashire MP has backed a new regime to stop youngsters buying booze, cigarettes and other restricted goods such as solvents and glue.
Burnley's Labour MP Peter Pike is supporting of the Association of Convenience Stores (ACS), which represents local grocers, newsagents and small shops, in a campaign to change the culture of underage purchasing through a tough "no proof, no sale" policy.
He lent his support after seeing evidence gathered by ACS which showed attacks on retail staff are linked to attempted underage purchases of alcohol, cigarettes and other restricted goods.
Mr Pike said: "It's essential retailers are able to work in a safe environment. Responsible consumers will appreciate the necessity of protecting underage people -- and here I am not talking just of 15-17 year olds, but far younger from underage drinking and smoking."
