WHY can't Bury Football Club and its followers see beyond what happens out on the pitch?
I attended the latest meeting of the Forever Bury group and it was farcical. Getting information from their representative, Roger Barlow, was like pulling teeth, such was this director's reluctance to share information about recent Bury FC board meetings. Mr Barlow appears to have forgotten that it is his role to act as a conduit for those who elected him.
Having witnessed these proceedings and listened carefully to what members of the committee had to say, I really do fear for the stability of the club during its tremendous uphill struggle. It appears to me that the Forever Bury committee members are incapable of grasping the seriousness of the situation, and in identifying the remedy required.
Despite a Supporters' Stakeholder scheme being put forward on several occasions, they continue to reject something which has been demonstrated elsewhere to work. And so, while other football clubs have successfully put this scheme in place, and raised hundreds of thousands of pounds through it, the Forever Bury committee are content to fiddle about with tin-pot social events which always result in the same die-hard supporters being asked to throw good money after bad.
Little more than £10,000 has been raised and I believe that the committee are putting party politics and self-preservation ahead of the long-term, well-being of Bury FC and true fan representation.
As long as the team continues to occupy a play-off place then I believe too many Shakers' fans will refuse to see the problems which continue to beset the club off the pitch. The overwhelming impression I gained from the Forever Bury meeting was that it really is a case of the blind leading the blind.
True supporters of the Shakers should take heed and realise that there is a vehicle in place which will allow them to have any suggestion or idea put to the vote.
I am sure that every real fan can remember that nightmare period, less than a year ago, when the club entered Administration. If we supporters don't prevent it happening then I fear that those people leading the club will once contaminate us with the same illness and next time it may be too late to find a cure!
P.P., Tottington.
