THE 2003 Football Aid season has officially kicked off and Clarets fans can now bid to play on the sacred Turf Moor pitch.

Football Aid, a national charity, allows fans to play where their heroes play. In teams managed and captained by former club legends, they play on the hallowed turf wearing the famous jersey.

Football Aid was born two years ago when Scottish businessman Craig Paterson conceived the programme as a means of raising funds for children who suffer from type 1 juvenile diabetes folloing his son being diagnosed with the illness.

"In the first two years of operation, Football Aid has generated £750,000 throughout its bidding period and has already distributed a considerable amount to a variety of charitable causes throughout the UK. With the solid foundations we've worked hard to develop over the past 24 months, we hope to raise over £1 million this year," said Craig.

Last year's teams were managed by Clarets legends Willie Irvine and Andy Lochhead, and captained by Vince Overson and Gerry Harrison. In this year's match the managers have yet to be chosen. However, the captains will be Andy Farrell and Ashley Hoskin.

Marketing co-ordinator Nick Palich said: "It is a fantastic opportunity for Burnley fans to make their dream come true and play where their heroes play. Last year's event was a huge success and the players thoroughly enjoyed playing on the Turf, and especially playing alongside their heroes."

The bidding period opened last month and runs to March 31. To play on Turf Moor, visit www.footballaid.com to bid for a place. The game will take place on Thursday, May 15, 2003.
