BLACKBURN midfielder Garry Flitcroft believes Rovers can still mount a charge for Europe in the wake of Saturday's 1-0 win over Southampton at Ewood.

David Thompson's strike proved enough to secure Rovers' first Premiership victory since January 1.

And Flitcroft believes that result could now act as a catalyst for a European charge during the remaining 11 games of the season.

"If you look at the West Ham and Aston Villa defeats, they were two bad results," said Flitcroft.

"But to be fair to the lads, we've had a good season apart from the last couple of weeks so we were desperate to put things right and now we want to finish as high up the league as we possibly can.

"The gaffer has told us that we've got 33 more points to play for and we've got to look at winning as many games as we can.

"If we can finish higher than we did last season then I think it will have been another good season for us.

"And as for Europe, who knows?

"We can only battle away, keep picking up three points, hope that the teams around us drop points, and then try and get as close to Europe as we can.

"We've now got two weeks without a game but we've just got to get focused on the Chelsea game and make sure we get something out of that one as well."

But manager Graeme Souness insists his players are still not safe from the threat of relegation.

"We've got 11 games left and the aim is to try and get as many points as we can between now and May," said Souness.

Rovers' Academy Under 19s lost 3-1 at home to Liverpool on Saturday but there was better news from the Under 17s who beat Bolton 1-0.
