CLITHEROE'S FA Vase dream ended for another season at the hands of Screwfix Direct Western outfit Devizes Town in controversial circumstances.

Although below their best, Clitheroe dominated possession for long periods but couldn't punish the visitors in this last 16 tie.

The Blues started well and moved the ball around but struggled to find the pass which would unlock Devizes' back line.

Gary Jackson had a half chance which went wide but, overall, the first half didn't produce many fireworks, while Lee Sculpher and his defensive colleagues were rarely in danger.

The pattern of the second half followed the first, with Devizes happy to defend deep and allow the home team more possession.

The game shot into life in the closing stages when Lee Buggie, who had replaced Jackson, forced the keeper into his first important saves of the day.

Clitheroe took the lead on 89 minutes when a loose ball dropped to Simon Garner on the edge of the box and the young left winger hammered his shot into the top corner.

But, less than 60 seconds later with the game in injury time, a ball was drilled into the Blues' penalty area and, in the melee, the assistant referee saw something the 22 players, 563 supporters and referee didn't see - a handball.

It was given against Adam Gardner, the home players surrounded the referee but the decision stood and Godley stepped up to send Kris Richens the wrong way and force the game into extra time.

The decision knocked the stuffing out of Clitheroe and, within three minutes of the restart, were trailing. Godley broke clear and slotted the ball past Richens.

There was still time for an equaliser and Jones had the best opportunity when he latched on to Neil Spencer's flick on but ballooned over the bar.

The game was put beyond Clitheroe five minutes from time when Godley rounded Richens to complete his hat-trick.
