HOUSEHOLDERS in Hyndburn have the chance to win £100 when they recycle newspapers.
The prize is on offer from Lancashire Waste Partnerships, a county council initiative which encourages people to recycle more rubbish.
Last year Hyndburn residents recycled 1,427 tonnes of paper through the doorstep collection scheme.
The scheme covers 35,000 households, and all those taking part will have a chance to win. They must either pick up a leaflet from the council offices or fill in the form in the Lancashire Evening Telegraph on Thursday. The completed form should be included in the fortnightly newspaper recycling collection, and every day between next Monday and February 28 20 leaflets will be selected at random to go forward to a main draw, made on the last day.
Hyndburn Council is trying to reach government targets of recycling 12 per cent of household waste by 2003/04, rising to 18 per cent next year.
Lancashire targets push that figure to 32 per cent and 38 per cent respectively. Hyndburn recycles only six per cent of its household waste.
Every tonne of paper recycled will save 15 trees, and their surrounding wildlife and habitat.
Councillor Tim O'Kane, portfolio holder for environmental health, said: "Newspapers and magazines make up a significant portion of the typical bin in Hyndburn. At Hyndburn Council we are committed to making it easy for people to recycle and our doorstep collection scheme is just such an idea."
