A DENTAL practice gutted by an arson attack could reopen this week after three months of repairs.

The Mark Wilkinson Dental Practice, in Whalley Road, Accrington, was torched after a burglary last November but is booking appointments for next week.

A back door had been forced and property, including computer parts and a chainsaw, were stolen.

Police estimated the damage caused by smoke and fire to more than 20 rooms to be around £200,000 but the exact cost is still being calculated.

Most of the equipment was unusable because of damage and contamination but some was sent away for sterilisation.

The ground floor of the building had to be stripped, including carpets and wallpaper, before industrial cleaners and decorators could move in.

New specialist equipment is now being fitted.

Mr Wilkinson, who is the only dentist at the practice, said: "We are booking appointments for next week and are hoping we will be open for a day or two later this week.

"Most of the work has been done and it is now sufficient for myself and a hygienist to work in.

"It is still a bit stressful but we are glad to be getting co-ordinated."

Mr Wilkinson, who has around 6,000 patients, said they would be contacted on a priority basis.

The rear of the building, close to where the fire started, will need further work before it can reopen to the public.

Jason Wildman, of Albert Road, Colne, has been charged with two counts of burglary and one of arson.

He has been remanded in custody until February 28.
