BLACKBURN'S BNP councillor has been quizzed by police over an allegation that he attacked his wife.

Coun Robin Evans, who won a seat in Mill Hill in November, attended Darwen police station voluntarily on Saturday after his estranged wife, Gwen, lodged a complaint against him.

A file about the allegations has now been passed to the Crown Prosecution Service, although the police are recommending that no further action be taken against the self-employed builder.

Coun Evans left his wife, Gwen, 34, of Argyle Street, Darwen, before Christmas after striking up a friendship with 21-year-old party worker Julie Russell.

Early on Christmas Day, police were called to an incident involving the estranged couple at the house in Argyle Street, where Gwen still lives with their 10-year-old son.

Mrs Evans was arrested for a breach of the peace and spent the night in police cells before being released.

She lodged her complaint against Coun Evans on January 20.

Coun Evans said today: "I went voluntarily to the police station and answered their questions.

"I hope it is all over now. At the end of the day, my son is the most important person in all this and I want it over for his sake."

The Anti-Nazi League, which campaigned against Coun Evans before his election, put out a press release last week claiming he had been arrested.

Coun Evans said: "I was not arrested at all. I am annoyed with the ANL, but not surprised, that they are trying to rope my family into my politics."

Mrs Evans said: "I was arrested because I threw something at Robin and he ducked and it hit the policeman.

"I am disappointed it has taken the police so long to interview Robin. No-one seems to take it seriously."

A police spokesman said: "On December 25 2002, the police were called to a dispute at Argyle Street, Darwen. Officers arrested a 34-year-old woman to prevent a breach of the peace. She was later released without charge.

"On January 20 2003, the woman made a complaint of assault against her estranged husband. He later voluntarily attended Darwen police station where he was interviewed. He was not arrested.

"A file has been submitted to the Crown Prosecution Service and the police are recommending no further action in this case."

A spokesman for the ANL said it put out the press release, in which they claimed Coun Evans was arrested at his Mill Hill ward surgery on February 1, after hearing about it "from a good source."
