A LEIGH school has received the accolade of specialist college status in business and enterprise.
Bedford High School, in Manchester Road, is just one of 217 schools across the country to receive specialist status in this particular field.
Staff at Bedford had to raise £50,000 in sponsorship and prepare a four year plan complete with targets for the teaching of business and enterprise-related subjects. The title brings with it an extra £100,000 to spend on new buildings and a further £123 per pupil for at least the next four years.
Recently Bedford has opened a £1 million science and community resource centre and also won the Excellence in Work-related Learning title in recognition of how well it prepares pupils for life after school.
Headteacher Steve Preston said: "This is great news for the school and great news for Leigh. It shows people what we have known for a long time, that Bedford High School has some of the very best facilities and standards of teaching there are."
