AN ATHERTON agent is seeking talented artists to fight for the honour of becoming Leigh's 'Pop Idol.' Former DJ Steve James is seeking the best in local entertainment to take part in a 13-week long contest at Wigan Road Labour Club.
Steve's Shout Promotions Ltd has pulled in £2,000 of sponsorship from Coors Brewery and Derek Beaumont, a director of Sporting Club, Leigh, and A and B Windows.
There is a £1,000 first prize up for grabs for the talented winner.
Starting on Wednesday, February 26, at 8pm in the Edna Road club there will be nine weeks of heats, three weeks of semi-finals follwed by a grand final.
Each week agents, entertainers and concert secretaries will be invited to judge the acts.
Steve said: "It is amazing how much interest has already been shown from Blackpool, Liverpool, Preston and Bolton.
"The idea of the competition is that it will prove a winner for everyone involved during a period when little clubs are facing hard times.
"The clubs want to attract more people, the artists have the chance to find more work and the sponsors get some publicity. We are hoping to keep entry to a high standard.
"The contest will be a window for acts wanting to be seen by the right people."
The Coors-Carling Talent Competition is open to all acts over 18 and applicants are asked to submit a CD or tape of their work.
They will be asked to complete a 20 minute set on stage and singers will be limited to solos and duos.
Further details and application forms are available from Steve on 01942 876073 or his website at www.shout123.co.uk
