I HAVE been reading with interest and some dismay the recent letters about Radcliffe High School.

One contributor said that Radcliffe High School "isn't as bad as it was ten to fifteen years ago" but that now "in certain classes, kids just scream and mess about".

In my experience, as a pupil of the school from 1985-1990, this was never the case. Neither do I see this being the case now that I teach English at Radcliffe High.

At least seven of the staff who taught me are still teaching at the school, demonstrating their commitment as well as their continued excellence. Although the school currently faces an uncertain future, staff morale is not low. We are united both in opposing the proposed amalgamation and wanting to provide the best education for our pupils.

I agree with the positive opinions about headteacher, Mr Rollinson. He has strived to raise the prestige of the school as well as the morale and education of pupils and will continue to do so. However, on the subject of "deserting a sinking ship" commented on by one correspondent he has done no such thing.

Mr Rollinson secured his new position before the governors and staff of the new school knew anything about the proposed plans for amalgamation. As for not keeping parents informed, this has not been done because, as yet, there are no definite plans. I'm also sure that parents will be consulted in time when the proposals are finalised.

I have been impressed with some of our pupils who have already done what "Concerned Parent" has suggested. They have united to draw up a petition opposing the proposed amalgamation. I think this demonstrates what sort of pupils we have at Radcliffe High School; loyal and organised ones, not ones that merely "scream and shout and mess about".

As a Radcliffe resident too, I am very concerned about the future of education in the town. Radcliffe High did not fail me and I am as keen as anyone to see the school continue to thrive. I only hope that we really can rely on parental support if, and when, we need it most.

CLAIRE COUNCIL,

teacher of English, Radcliffe High.
