A NEW skatepark has played a major role in tackling the problems of troublesome teens.
Since the £185,000 park opened in December on derelict land off Hutchinson Way, Radcliffe, there have been no reports of youngsters hanging round street corners and causing a nuisance.
Inspector John Higson, of Radcliffe Township, revealed the good news at the latest Radcliffe Area Board meeting.
But there is a danger that the skatepark, the only free and fully equipped one in the North West, could be a victim of its own success.
Mr Rod Launders, of Osborne Walk, said: "I was speaking to a group of 14-year-olds and they said it needs supervising, especially at weekends, as it gets so busy."
Up to 100 skateboarders, in-line skaters and BMX bikers use the skatepark at the same time.
Tim Pyzniuk, area youth service manager, said: "I'm glad it's as popular as it is and we are looking at adding a third terrace to it, which may help ease congestion.
"As it has an open-access policy, it would be difficult to limit the users and there is nothing in the budget to provide rangers or supervisors."
He added that he is currently working with a group that could act as voluntary warders, as well as using the youngsters themselves to help marshal it. Possible solutions include the introduction of timed use and one way systems.
