Chorley Harriers and Rossendale Harriers took big contingents to Rivington to compete in the Winter Hill Fell Race and rewarded with good team performances.

Nick Leigh from Altrincham won the tough fell race in 1.4038 with Steve Clawson of Rossendale the only local runner to break in to the top 10 when he finished in 10th place in 1.44.33.

Chorley took second place in the men's team competition with Alan Alty (13th), Malc Christie (18th) and Ian Williams (19th) making up the strong running team.

Rossendale finished a place behind with a trio that included Clawson, Derek Schofield (21st) and Ken Taylor (35th).

In the Men's Vets team competition, Clayton-le-Moors were second thanks to the performances of Kieran Carr (15th), Martin Brady (22nd) and G Newsam (23rd).

The Rossendale trio of Schofield, Taylor and Geoffrey Fielding (25th) finished in third place.

In the ladies competion, Katy Thompson of Clayton was fifth overall and first Lady 45 in 2.19.01 with Chorley Harrier Dawn Atkins sixth in 2.19.04.

Atkins was in the Chorley team that included Jan Atkins (9th) and Janet Chaplin (13th) that took second place in the team event.

Rossendale's Linda Hannah (12th), Julie Feeney (14th) and Brenda Brady (15th) were third team.

Horwich were by far the best team performers -- with five runners in the top 10 -- winning the Mens, Mens Vets and Ladies team prizes.
