MORE than 100 people will lose their jobs when a factory closes at the end of the year.

Engineering firm Ingersoll Rand in Swan Lane, Hindley Green, has announced that 106 jobs will go when production is transferred to other factories all over the world.

The distribution and commercial side of the business will be moved to Ingersoll Rand's second site in Hindley Green.

The company, which manufactures percussive tools, grinders and hoists, says jobs are being cut because of worldwide over-capacity. It said it needed to remain strong and competitive in global markets.

A spokesman said: "This is a difficult time and we will keep everyone informed about the progress of the talks with the unions during the coming weeks."
